First I want to thank the creative Whimzy gals for having me teach this past weekend at their lovely establishment. They're funny, smart and very organized and a pleasure to work with. Here are some pictures of some happy students making their baby doll necklaces along with the kits I made for them. Thanks to all that came (Melanie, Karen, Donna, Terry, Suzanne, Dawn and Sheryl):

New classes are always expected when you teach so I have been experimenting and playing. Here is a new project that I will release full information on in the next month. In the mean time this is how it looks now in the raw. I will bake it then cast a mold for mass production. Can you guess what it might be? (besides a doll)

Also, made a little gift for my pal (it was her b-day yesterday). She's a good freind and you've probably seen her helpin' me out at GF: She is always there for me and my family. thanks KB

Yay!! This Sunday, Nov.6, 11:30-3:30p I'm teaching a class at a new venue in Pasadena! Zinnia is a mecca of mixed media, funky fun finds. I've had several requests from students to teach there and I have my very first class there this Sunday. I hope you join us! I shared this ghost story on FB and thought I'd share it here. If you have a real ghost story, I'd love to hear it!

Several years ago my hubbie and I decided to go on a road trip from LA to Canada. We started off like usual with some cash to spend, a road map (this was before i-phones or gps) and that's about it. Gypsies at heart we trusted our instincts eating when we were hungry and checking in to motels when were tired. Starting off on the road with no real expectations we were on another adventure thinking we would hit the Oregon border in 2 maybe 3 leisurely days. The second day on the road we hit some weather, kind of bad rain, with fog through Northern California by the imposing Mt. Shasta. We were so close to the border but the rain and fog was bad and we had to stop. It was getting late. In the middle of no where, somewhere between Mt.Shasta and the Oregon border we made our exit to the only motel we could find.....not the best or cleanest.......motel 6. There was only one room available. Checked in and got the keys to room 344. Didn't feel right but what other option did we have but sleep in the car. The clerk said something about the locks......okay.......didn't make sense at the time, but we were tired and just wanted a place to sleep. Walked up 3 flights of stairs and get to the room. First thing I notice: 2 dead bolts along with the regular lock on the dingy door and thick metal bars on the windows. I look at the other room doors and windows and no such thing, only this room. Strange. Walk in. Gross room and bathroom.....its pouring rain outside.....again better than nothing. Husband says he'll be right back and goes to the nearest store for some smokes. While he's gone, I climb into bed, turn on the tube and prepare for bed. A few minutes later the windows shake and sound as if someone is trying to enter. The curtains in the room flail wildly forward as if a fan had suddenly blown directly behind them. Are the windows open I ask myself? Is the air conditioning on? No. My heart drops and I know immediately what is happening.......it's happened all my life but to reassure myself I say "Chip, is that you?" No reply. Curtains violently russle. I say, with my bravest voice " Be gone, go away, I'm not afraid of you!". Curtains stop. Heart pounding, I try to focus on the tv. A few seconds later I hear what sounds like some one running outside the room, up and down the corridor only up on the floor above and then I see the door knob moving. It moves forward and back, forward and back, forward and back. Door moves as if someone is trying to get in without a key. Heart pounding, again wishing it was my husband and knowing in my gut it wasn't, "Is that you Chip?". No answer. Now I'm getting mad. This m-f-er is messing with me. Don't know why I feel the need to argue with a ghost but I do. Again I command it to leave and that I'm not afraid. It finally dissapears, hubbie comes back and I tell him the room is haunted. He dose not believe me. Next morning after I wake, husband (Chip) tells me that after I fell asleep, he kept hearing someone running very loudly outside our room and it sounded like it was on the level above. Aggravated, he went outside several times to see who it was but could never see anyone. More importantly, there was no level above us and my new hiking boots were gone. True story.

For those of you who have asked about online classes I will be teaching the first in many (I hope) coming July 6th. It's been approved for July 6 but it's not listed yet. Calling all Fiber-holic students out there! The first online class will be my Treasure Hunt Tassel (pics above and below) on the "A is For Artistic" online class web site HERE. These are like no other tassel you have ever seen and the pictures really don't do them justice. They're VERY big and really make a statement. It's an ideal project for those of us who, a hem, "collect stuff". Stay tuned for more online classes from other sites (maybe learn how to solder around polymer clay beads?) and if you have any requests let me know! As soon as the tassel class is listed I'll let you know here and on FB. Serendipity~ That's what I call it. Laying on my couch utterly exhausted from a show the day before, I did what I normally don't do and that is stay stationary...cruising blogs and web sites. I came across a blog for a store on Coronado Island in San Diego called The Attic. Intrigued by the pictures she had and the lovliness of her store I contacted her to make an appointment and possible sales, got a response right back and brought some of my wares for her to purchase last Friday.

Just got an email last night and she has already sold some of the bottles and a necklace and wants more!! Yay! It's such a great boutique, full of vintage and new furniture, jewelry, home decor, bling, crowns, birds, chandeliers, vintage clothes, soaps, pillows,candles and more. Okay, I rode my bike to Borders this past Monday and did something I NEVER do anymore....I sat in the craft book section and looked at books for about 2 hours! I came home with my newest obsession and inspiration **MOSAICS! I never do this because I am so busy making my own stuff but I needed to get out of the house and chill. Until Monday I had never heard of Laurel Skye and I wasn't really looking for any kind of book in particular but when I saw her book, Mosaic Renaissance, I imediately fell in love with her style and her story. I love how she adds mosaic to EVERYTHING! Her entire house is mosaic...bath tub, shoes, entry way, floor, outside of house, toaster, dish washer and everything else. The mosaic skulls in her book were the tipping point and I had to buy it!! You GOTTA check out her web site and her short youtube clips. I guarantee you will be inspired too! I've been asked to come back and teach a 2 day workshop in San Diego at the Bead Gallery. We have sold out the Saturday class (find it and link it) and have started a waiting list but have a couple seats left for the Sunday class "Lace Scrolls" which is a bracelet class (pictured above with the green roses) made with the "tube bead" featured in Jewelry Affaire magazine. No experience necessary. Class is $75, 10-4p. Bead Gallery is a large bead store located in the Scripps Ranch area of North San Diego and has a really nice selection of jewelry supplies, magazines, books and of course beads. I thought it high time that I tried to get published in a major magazine so I sent in some pics, description and here they are in the newest Stampington publication "Jewelry Affaire". What's even more fun is that several of my students/friends are in it too! Here are some little glimpses of their articles as well as mine but to get the full effect there is nothing like the tangible and visual appeal of having the magazine in your hand. Available in most book, bead and craft stores. I know for sure Garden of Beaden just got their copies (get them while you can!)and Irene is going to have a little trunk show for Lisa Loria and I in Upland to celebrate the publication on Friday April 22 from 4-7??? I met JoAnn a few years ago at an art retreat in Arizona that I was teaching (Art Unravelled). She took a class I taught on altered gift boxes with her sweet sis-in-law Rena. We hit it off immediately and found out we both lived close to each other in S.California. We would all meet in between classes and meals and talk and laugh. It was a great time. We kept in touch here and there and she put together another private class for me to teach wire wrapping for her and her close friends, this time in California. I'm not the only person she has taken class with obviously as she combines metalsmithing, resin, etching, soldering and cold connection. She is a full fledge jewelry and mixed media artist now making beautiful rustic pieces with new and vintage findings along with paper and mixed media art. Any body who has had the pleasure of meeting Lisa will be instantly impressed and drawn in by her light and happy spirit. She's not only an absolute down to earth sweet heart whom I clicked with immediately, she's also a mom (4 kids! super woman in my book), very creative and multi talented artist and painter, intelligent, funny, oh and yeah she is so pretty!! We met at Gilding the Lily 2(?) years ago. I was teaching a class on a really complicated necklace involving soldering and wire work. It was obvious Lisa new how to do a lot of jewelry construction because she would finish what ever technique I demo'd before any of the other students and considering there was a huge gap in the other students knowledge, she was very patient to say the least. Next time I saw her was at Glitterfest as a vendor. We both were first time vendors and have not stopped since (see post below for info on the next, not to miss Glitterfest). I took a look at her booth and my draw dropped! This gal is talented! Mostly known for her "bling babys"in the mixed media world, Lisa can not be pinned to just one artistic endeavor...she really is multi talented and you never now what she will do next, only that it will be spectacular. I have not had the pleasure to talk with Rita all that much....she moves quickly! We first met at Glitterfest a few shows back and while I haven't had the pleasure of spending a long span of time with her I feel I know her a little just from her blog and now that I will be vending a show she hosts with Christie Repassy in June, I think we'll get to know each other even more. I love the jewelry, class projects and wood work she posts on her blog and she always has an amazing over the top booth at Glitterfest. Well I can't say enough about Glitterfest! It is THE MOST wonderful show ever and this time there were even more people! I know! If you have been to GF it's hard to believe there could have been more people but Sheryl said this was the highest attendance since it's inception. She has expanded the show outdoors to include the "patio party" with larger ticket items and the weather was perfect! Many thanks to Nancy and Mr. Jamar for opening up a new space. The new location for workshops through Gilding the Lily has lots more room as you can see (13 students showed up!). It's only 3 blocks from the store and Nancy gives participating students a week before class to come into the Lily and get a 15% discount and opens early for students to buy before class.

All my students are amazing artists and I REALLY hope you all see this post and send a picture of what you made so I can post them. They were all so individual and beautiful and some of you left before I could take pictures. Thank you all for having a sense of humor and hanging in there with only one hole punch!! It's December 22, 2010 and before you all go into limbo (in a good way) because of the holidays I want to thank all the students who took my classes, all the establishments who had the trust and confidence in me to provide space to teach this past year and all those wonderful patrons who supported my social networks and blogs and creative habits and bought my stuff.

Although I have taught for many years, it's just been in the last 3 years that it's been full time and I have made so many friends along the way. To all the establishments, I want to thank owner Irene Sanchez at Garden of Beaden for her warmth, friendship, creativity and enthusiasm....it's contagious.... and to her clientele that love her enough to trust her when she says "you need to take this class"! To Nancy Jamar of the ever so lovely Gilding the Lily. She's had a vision from the time she opened to provide an atmosphere of a by gone era when art and craftsmanship mingled. She continues to inspire with her amazing selection of the vintage and the unusual and attract all us artsy glitter girls who want it. Tomorrow night, Friday Dec.17, will be the last boutique/trunk show of the year. I wanted to share some of the new items I have concocted. I especially LOVE the new charms with the rhinestones.....not sure what to call them or charge for them. That's always hard. Each oval charm was cut from nickel sheet metal by hand, patina ed, hand stamped and distressed and filed. I added a double row of rhinestones and tiny eyelets. I made 5 in all and wanted to make them all into necklaces but only had time to make two. I'll add them to my etsy if they don't sell tomarrow.

I had a great time at the Garden of Beaden last night and I wanted to share a few pictures of some new things I have been working on before they are gone. So it's that time of the year.....lots of preparation for holidays and family. First up was t-day...that was fun and I'm looking forward to Christmas. I love my family and being with them. The San Diego mountains are a haven of pure air and solitude. The icing on the cake was how wonderfully cold it was. i love the cold!! I took my daughter and her friend on a hike....it was one I do every time I go down except we had a little detour and had to go another way....long story short a 1 hour hike turned into a 2 hour hike. Also went ice skating which is soooo much fun. Saw old friends, went to a swap meet with my parents. I'm so lucky and grateful to have such a wonderful family, honest to God.

Since my lively hood relies on how many classes I teach every week, I have to say I am a little nervous to be heading into holding little if any classes until mid-January. In the mean time I am lucky to have two trunk shows Dec.10 and Dec.17. In case you are so inclined here are the details:

Friday Dec. 10, 6-9p Garden of Beadin Upland,Ca- Me selling my wares, lots of new and eclectic gifts,cards and jewels. Wine and appies too.

Friday Dec.17, 6:30-8:30p Redondo Beach,CA- Private residence wine and appies. There will be several independent artist's selling their wares. Details to follow.

Part of being an independent entrepreneur involves 24/7 pro active thinking and doing. Thinking about my schedule 3-6 months out, setting deadlines, making samples and proposals, contacting new establishments, making things to sell at shows and my store and it's all fun and I love it but it it's not for everyone. You have to have faith that everything will work out even if you don't know how it will. You become creative in other ways ...its called survival. Part of this dry spell I will be having for the next few weeks made me think creatively. Watch my etsy store in the coming weeks for some GREAT deals on hard to find supplies for all you crafty people. Working with wire is an integral part of my jewelry designs and I am so pleased that I will have a chance to immerse and share my vast knowledge to students and that GOB has given me the creative license to do so. The first series starts this Saturday Nov.13 "Find it and link it". All the classes will be geared toward the novice however even experienced wire benders will probably learn a new trick or ten. This class is a must to learn the basic foundations of making all types of jewelry connections. You will learn a TON of techniques! Here are some pics of what to expect:

First I have to say it has been magical these past few days. Did you see that full moon? It's been blustery and witchy and the sun is shining in a most peculiar way with a touch of coolness and warmth. Of course I often see and feel these things and think it's probably all in my head but it keeps me sane. I am sooooooo excited that Halloween is almost here and I have all my decorations up (they have been for awhile). Dia de los Muertos Shrine of the Divine

So this class (Shrine of the Divine) was put together at the last minute and will be on Monday Oct.25 at Garden of Beaden in Upland,CA from 11-3p, $50 INCLUDES ALL SUPPLIES! No experience necessary. It is exclusive to GOB as they have an annual Dia de los Muertos bead and art swap and this was part of my entry. The picture does not do justice to the piece (click it for a better view) as it is very sparkly and glittery and very 3 dimensional but it is at the store so go take a look if you're close by. I will be teaching a very basic version of metal embossing also known as "repujado" or "repousse'" along with paper flower and shrine construction, rubberstamping and punching. The metal embossed piece of Frida is what you see in the frame, but you are not limited to just that image. I will have more to work with. Thought I would give you a glimpse into my haunted studio...........well it's really not haunted but I have been SOOOOOOOO into Halloween tinkering away at new pieces for GLITTERFEST!! woohoo. Can't Wait!! I usually work more on my jewelry but not so this time. I have lots of new Halloween paper art like tags, gift pouches, gift matchboxes, cards, ornaments, maybe a banner or two and more! It must have been after I got the new Stampin Up! catalog (I'm a demonstrator)and seeing the awesome Halloween stamps and accessories they had and the ideas in the catalog that got me all excited and THEN serendipitously seeing what Tim Holtz is doing and creating with his new line of Halloween dies and tags!!! UGH so much great creativity out there....I love it! I will also have a few Christmas type things as well as new jewelry for sale too. I swear that if I didn't have to eat or sleep (or take care of my family's meals, cleaning, laundry schedule etc...) I would probably never leave my studio! I'm not kidding. It has a bathroom and enough room to sleep. What more would I need? I LOVE,LOVE, LOVE making stuff. I wake up every morning thinking about what I will work on with much anticipation. I am so lucky to live this creative life.

Yay!! I have finally produced two tutorials!! This will be the first of many to come. My teaching schedule is so crazy that I thought I should hone it in and start offering tutorials. Offering online classes is also on my to do list but seems so daunting since those require video. For now my Etsy store seems to be a good place to start so they are available here: shadesofakasha.etsy.com . There are two tutorials: The Tube Bead tutorial & Tube Bead Earring kit and tutorial. The tube beads I use in my jewelry are a constant conversation piece so I thought I would offer just the bead as a tutorial and for $8 you can't go wrong! You will receive complete instruction, diagrams/picture and material list in a PDF format.

The second is the Tube Bead earring KIT and tutorial. This is a COMPLETE BOXED CLASS with step by step detailed instructions, everything to make the earrings plus extra for practice (sterling silver wire, garnets, pearls), diagrams and pictures all for $40. I often make my treasure necklaces and never get a chance to take a picture of them before they sell. Here is one that I did take a picture of before I sold it (today) to a new student of mine also named Robin. Over 100 years ago in a doll factory located in Thuringia,Germany, “Frozen Charlottes” dolls were manufactured. These hard to find treasures, broken and not, have become trophies when found and highly collectable among mixed media artists. It is the resurrection and collection of these enigmatic figures that guided me to make this necklace and share my techniques. You will learn Robins signature wire wraping techniques , soldering and miniature embellishment….making a tiny tiara for Charlotte, preserving her in a miniature vial and attaching it to a beautiful sterling silver & vintage finding necklace that you will learn how to make! Class fee is structured two ways: $60 for class only, material list below or $100 includes sterling silver wire, chain, vial, antique charlotte, vintage rhinestone findings and ephemera and everything else to make the necklace. ALSO this Saturday July 10, Piecemakers Costa Mesa CA. 11-3:30. $50 fee includes LUNCH (yummy) and a good amount of supplies. Call 714-641-3112 to pay for class.......there's only a few seats left! Turn a plain bottle into a doll, necklace or vessel for keepsakes. Robin will show you fun and creative applications using wax, wire, assemblage, collage, solder, fibers, buttons, rusted metal, broken ceramic and doll parts . We will cover your bottle with salvaged, repurposed and new ephemera and turn it into a unique conversation piece. You should be able to finish 1-3 bottles. If time allows, we will learn how to paint a simple rose onto your chosen surface. Robin will supply one small bottle for each student, beeswax, wire, soldering iron, paint, melting pot, cheesecloth and expendables.

Supplies:
1 or more small and medium size (2-8 inches) old or new perfume and medicine bottles

Ephemera to personalize your bottles. This can include: chain, charms, vintage lace, buttons, broken jewelry, doll parts, toy pieces, millinery, keys, pearls, vintage text and patterns etc.

It's been too long since the last post. Isn't that a typical line for the beginning of a post? My child will no longer be in elementary school....September she'll be in middle school. Last week was the celebration of that plus family stays, cleaning, food prep, entertaining, workshop prep, workshops and filling orders for clients. Sometimes I wonder how I do it all and I know I'm not alone out there. Here are some pictures of new pieces and my newest angel. Making jewelry from unusual items has become a passion for me and I am constantly experimenting. The lastest issue of Somerset Life has oodles of quick/easy projects to make which is where I got the inspiration to make these pouches. I didn't actually buy the magazine so if any one knows the name of the gal who made these let me know. I made these gift pouches with toilet paper roles, old ledger paper and images plus a layer of wax. They are SO addicting. If I didn't have a full weekend teaching I would have made more but instead will have to wait till I get home. I filled them with goodies for my treasure necklace kits and attached them to paper bags that have even more stuff in them. When I get back I will try to do a little tut on them.

Post Glitterfest & Updates

WOW! What a crazy day Glitterfest was and way too much fun! The patrons were lined up before the doors opened and when the flood gates separated it was 3 1/2 hours of non stop, wall to wall, table to table bliss! It thinned out around 1:30 and was semi normal.....unfortunately there was a THIEF amongst the crowd and he or she stole one of my newest crosses that I spent hours creating and will never have another exactly like it. If you see some one wearing or selling a large 4 inch brass cross that has a key layered on top with the letters "peace" stamped into it, layered onto another black cross LET ME KNOW! The cross has 2 tiny and one larger religious medals hanging from it. It's on a very long beaded chain with black and torquoise crystals. It is also signed by me on the back of the cross with the initials RDH, actually stamped. I think its really stupid on a cosmic level to steal a cross! BAD KARMA WILL COME TO THE IDIOT WHO STOLE FROM EVERYONE! I wasn't the only one who had merchandise stolen. Several others did too. It won't stop me from going again because it's such a great show.....in fact it's the best show I have ever done with the best organizers and artists around! A BIG THANK YOU TO SHERYL AND ALL THE ORGANIZERS AND HELPERS FOR GLITTERFEST! Also a big thank you to my pal Karen. I wouldn't have been able to manage my booth without her. Check out her blog and etsy! She sells really cute vignettes of vintage findings, cool banners (custom too) and some other hand made goodies. She is also unofficially one of my "reps" and is always promoting me. I can't wait till the next Glitterfest, Oct.2. The theme will be for Halloween and Christmas! I also want to thank ALL of my students and friends who came by my booth, gave me hugs, bought stuff and wore jewelry they made in my classes!!! That is the best endorsement ever! I felt so loved!!

Laughter is the best medicine....sounds cliche' but there's a reason for it. my daughter makes me belly laugh...she's just like her daddy. these pics are taken with wigs. we love wigs. they're so much fun. I think I have around 10 and my daughter has about the same. My mother in law gave them to us this weekend to use for future Halloween (I am THE source for costumes) so we started early and just laughed like crazy.

For those who don't know what we REALLY look like, here is a picture recently taken last week. we are celebrating my hubbies birthday.

The past few days have been wonderful and of course a little stressful but ultimately gratifying. The Saturday class was full and fantastic and the pendants that everyone made were so, so cool. I didn't take pictures of everyones pieces but here are a few: Karen, Janet, Tara and Geraldine. Thanks to all of you for coming!!

My 2 day workshop in Las Vegas went well above my expectations thanks to Kim at Bead Haven and Jan Ballagh who introduced me to Kim to teach the classes. Kim manages Bead Haven and it really is a haven for beads! Oh my gosh you could spend HOURS in there shopping and I heard the same from all the other students raving about the selection..... cash register ringing! Kim and Milton (?) were very proactive and organized which makes teaching a lot easier. Everything was set up and ready to go. Gail, her sister, owns two bead stores with the original Bead Haven in Michigan. She was in the class and asked if I would like to come teach in Michigan...sounds good to me! Never been there but I'm always ready for a new adventure. Thanks to all the students that flew out from Michigan and Ohio (Alice!) as well as the locals and even one from L.A. A special thanks to Jan for being the liaison for it all, picking me up and dropping me off to the airport, feeding me, housing me and providing all around hospitality. I actually took some pictures of the class (for a change).

Vegas Baby!

I'm going to see my family for 4 days and am a little stressed because I have to get ready for VEGAS! Plus I'm teaching a class the day before I leave for Vegas so as much as I love seeing my family (they live about 3 hours away) I thought I would be a little farther along with all my prep, but it always works out in the end. I am going to Vegas in about a week for a sold out 2 day workshop and have been organizing and putting about 40 kits together. The thing about my kits is that I can't just go to my local craft store and buy the materials....they're vintage findings so it's a little stressful trying to find everything but at the same time it is fun and it's all about the hunt, rummaging flea markets, tracking ebay, checking out thrift stores. Plus I always do more than I need to so the students can finish their project by preping a lot of the jewelry pieces.

When I was a little girl I LOVED dolls....I made my Barbie dolls clothes, pierced their ears, made pillows, sheets and pillow cases for them, accessories, shoes, painted their nails, fixed their hair and cut it. I especially loved making paper dolls and designing clothes for them. I meticulously cut out and colored every tiny detail and spent hours, even days on end conjuring new things to make. My big dolls all had a place on my bed and if any one of them had been moved I knew it..... To this day I still love dolls.....mostly altered and especially old ones, but some people think they're creepy. I have never felt that way. I have been working on lots of projects for the last couple months and things are finally starting to come together. I started painting some very old doll heads and bodies to add to my jewelry and assemblages and am really excited to see what comes of that. About a month ago I won a large lot of very, very old rosary centers. I made a pair of earrings with some that I really like and will probably make more. I will be a vendor at Glitterfest, May 22 and there is nothing like having to have some inventory for a show to put a fire under my patootie! So here is a tiny preview of some of the parts....more to come. Let me know what you think.

Soldering 101

This class was listed a little late so we still have openings. Please join me this Saturday, March 27 from 11-3p, Gilding the Lily, Fullerton Ca. to make this elegant necklace. It is geared toward beginners but even the seasoned solderer will be sure to learn something new. Everything you need to make the 5 charms is included in the class fee. Contact Dede Warren 714-757-0558. The class is called: Soldering 101-5's a charm. Please bring your soldering equipment IF you have it. You'll be able to finish your charms a lot faster if you do. Other wise I have equipment you can use.
